Hello, I am Jordi Gros Mascarilla, a
carácter born in april 16th in 1979.
The fate or maybe luck chose for me
a humble family in the catalonian
city of Lleida. This family was
composed by my parents, Josep y
Conxita, and by a brother 15 months
older than me, Albert. With my
broher we have shared a lot of
anechdotes, experiences, laughs...
and a lot of adventures. Those
adventures were motivated by the
hobby that we share, painting
historical miniatures.
Today, destiny or life, made us
follow different paths and our lifes
start to flow through other ways but
I know certainly that the passion
for our hobby will keep us togheter
forever.
As
you may have read, mi brother is in
the february month in the website
and I don’t want to bore you because
our beginning has been very similar.
So, after thinking about it for a
while, I want to comment you what
this hobby means for me.
Miniatures have meant a way of
living for me because I started with
12 years and I have been scheduling
my time between games, study and
painting. I’ve always been looking
for a space where there’s only me
and the hobby (and a voice that says
“reach me the black paint”, my
brother).
With the pass of time you realizes
that this started to be a way of
spending the time, but now it’s part
of your life and it conditionates
your spare time, your space and your
economy.
But the most important thing is that
it’s like a break for me, painting
makes me forget everything, relax
and unload stress. Every problem
looks simple when I paint.
But my relation with the hobby is
like a passional love, although not
always has been that fine, we’ve had
our problems, times with less
passion and moments when I’ve been
close to break the relationship. But
the best thing of this hobby is that
it gets you to know extraordinary
people and that’s what it gets you
in the hobby. Due to that passion,
I’ve travelled more than I could
wait or desire because I don’t like
to travel so much because I’m afraid
of airplanes. But knowing that after
an airplane trip I will meet the
wonderful people who I can talk and
share tips with a refreshing beer,
it makes worth the flight. It’s true
that I don’t assist so many shows as
my brother, due to the other passion
in my life, my job, I’m denthal
prothesic, a job that requires high
skill handjob, precission and a lot
of patience, something that has
helped me a lot in the hobby.
In
my life I’ve been so lucky to know
great people that became great
references for me, painting and
personally speaking and I want to
thank them, specially to Oscar López
(my teacher), Joan Miquel Masip
Pomar (my first reference and the
one that discovered for me the
international shows), Luis Esteban
Laguardia (a hurricane of enery, and
the gossip press of the hobby), and
specially I want to thank Juan
Carlos Avila Ribadas (I’m still
painting because of him, he has
given me his hand to help me get out
of the hole, thank you), and of
course my brother Albert Gros
Mascarilla (we challenge each other
to see who’s better, he, without a
doubt, but don’t tell him!). I want
to remark too great friends like
Juan Miguel Fernández and
Luis Martín Espada (the duet ),
Alfonso Prado (the “modesty”),
Manuel Picatoste (the joke), Santi
Doel (the strength of the bust),
Chema (reestar), Víctor Acebal (the
‘escanciador’), Oliverio (‘el
peanas’), Diego (from Alicante),
Diego Fortes (the machina from
Aragon), Carrascal and Cuqui (the
other duet), Jesús Gamarra
(perfection in drawings), Pepe
Gallardo (perfection in
gradiations), Román Navarro (the
constant evolution), Raúl García
Latorre (our genious), Luis Gómez
Platón (the most sincerous), … and a
lot more that I hope they can excuse
me for not include them. And a lot
more people that I hope to meet.
After 14 years and thousands of
undeletable moments, there are some
of them that mark you specially like
my first award in Euromilitaire 95
where I got a Certificate of Honour
in beginners category, that was a
magic moment, my first trip to an
international show and my first
award. Another moment was in Petit
Soldat 2002 in Aosta where I was
chosen to be a jury member for the
next year show, with my brother, it
was a great honour and a recognition
to my labour. Finally I have to
remark the gold medal I got in last
years Petit Soldat edition, a
cuestionable award but I enjoyed it
a lot and makes me want to improve
and became worthy that award.
My
objetives in this little world is to
sculpt my own figures in great
cuality (something very difficoult)
and compensate all of those that
have marveled me with their works
and try to put my little effort in
the hobby to keep it alive, because
it looks that it’s not the best
moment and we must be together and
give our humble collaboration.
Just to finish, I want to ask you
one thing, close your eyes and dream
with me. Imagine a figure born in an
idea of Marijn Van Gils, the
dinamism of Mike Blank, the pose of
Bill Horan, the fine detailing of
Juan Carlos Avila and the perfect
wrinkles of Raul Garcia Latorre, the
proportion of Stefano Cannone, the
painting of Giangranco Speranza,
Pepe Gallardo and Danilo Cartacci
and the groundwork of Christian
Petit.
Wonderful, isn’t? In my opinion that
must be in an art museum but our
hobby seems to be ‘in the shadow’
without the recognition it should
have. And we are treated like rare
bugs or freaks and maybe they are
right because our passion make us
feel different and super happy.
