Translation : Daniel Serrano
My
name is Francisco José Hernández
Sánchez. I was born in the city of
Granada on 24th of December in 1964,
so i'm 40 now, 184cm high and 95kg
weight. I have come to the world of
figures through the combat vehicles world
where I started around the 80's
after being in the army (La Legion), where
I discovered the figures that came
with the kits. Even now I still build
some vehicles but I have to say that
I prefer depicting human
portraits than machines.
I joined the 'professional' circuit
in the year 1998, after some years
that I only
painted on weekends, learning from
watching other modellers' works. Some
of them, nowadays, I can say that
are true friends, I'm lucky about that;
Pepe Gallardo, Stefano Cannone,
Rodrigo Hernández, Luis Gomez
Platón and others, great and humble,
more or less known, whose influence in my
style is very important and I've met
them in person; Bill Horan,
Gianfranco Speranza, Claudio
Signanini, Ivo Preda, Caballero
Delso , David
Romero , Jesus Gamarra , Luis
Esteban , Juan Carlos Avila , Raul
Garcia ,
Miguel Felipe , Roman Navarro ,
Eduardo Lopez Munuera , Victor
Castillo and
many other that I meet at the events
when my job lets me assist.
Nowadays, and because of the
pleasure and luck of painting for
commission, I know collectors from
all the world and they have always a place
in my tight waiting-list. I consider
them as friends, and that's why I can
paint more freely:F abio Nunnari ,
Pietro Cicero , Bob Zwald , Enzo
arazza , Renato Scutterini ,
Jean-Marie Francois , and spanish as
Luis
Esteban , my friendo Pepe "the guy
of the list", Alfonso Sanchez and
Dario, the
most of them great painters, and
many others that ocasionally ask me for
special commissions for their
collections. I want to mention the
manufacturers that I usually work
with: Elite from Manuel Moya, great
guy and
friend, Art Girona , Andrea , Corso
Models , Pegaso (Platoon)... being Elite
the most regular one, and that's an
honour for me.
I've
been colaborating with the magazine
Eurofiguras since '98 and that has been
a way to show my experiences and my
works and it helped me to know
a lot of people of this hobby. I
also colaborate with Figure
International since 2004, from
Andrea, with a professional and
friendly
relationship, but my home will
always be Accion Press.
At this moment I have my own hobby
shop dedicated exclusively to
figures (Classic
Hobby). The afternoons I teach
painting classes to some painters, some
of them consecrated, like Pepe
Jimenez who also writes articles for
Eurofiguras. That allows me to paint
4 or 5 hours a day. That keeps me 'fitted'
and is an adventage for being on the
wave.
Regarding awards and shows, I
consider them very important for my
promotion, but it's like a fever
that passes with the years and today
I
rather participate in shows, only if
a collector wants to promote the
figure, because if it's awarded it
will rise it's price (if they want
to sell it the
next years...).
Usually I assist to the shows as
Jury and to do seminaires. That's
rewarding and a
big honour. But sincerously I think
it's hard to judge other's works but it's
something that has to be done. I
think I have like 40 something
awards over
my shop and home, it may sound
pedantic but that's the way it is. I
rather clean them but my brushes, of
the better quality, Marta Kolinsky
00, 0, 1,
2 and 4. Some of them are very
expensive but they are the best ones.
I paint with acrylics and zenithal
lighting. I use 2 light day 60w
bulbs,
without magnifying glass, only to
check the work. I use glazes, and a
very
dilluted painting (even for priming)
what provides my figures with
superfine surfaces, what's very
appreciated by muy clients. Because
of that it
takes me too much time to finish a
figure but if you want to run... go
to the
stadium!
I
love painting american civil war and
franco prussian war figures, where my
style can be appreciated better, a
dark style as people say buy very
personal and different from others.
I use airbrush too to prime the
figures, I
don't like puttys for that. I use
the airbrush for lightening and
shadowing
horses but at the end I use my
brushes to 'kill' the machine's
impersonal
effect.
I'm
not in any association, I don't like
positions and so, but I have good
relations with the Almeria
Association, full of kind people and
cordiality. I'm
sure there are similar associations
in Spain and that's lightening. I
hope I could
know them all!
I'm
browsing frequently Lilliputmodel
website, where I can see that the
spanish level of painters is growing
high. Internet is a great way to
show our
passion. History rigurosity has to
be in mind but without getting
radical with
it. Once you've checked the color of
the uniform, the rest is art and as
art, it has a lot of different ways
of being depicted. A well documented
figure but horribly painted is very
sad. The balance of fidelity to
reality and
painting interpretation is the way
to follow and that's why I try to teach
to my students and hobby fans
interested in my work.
