Translation : Ernesto Reyes
Hi, my name is Ernesto Reyes
Stalhult, I was born in the busy
city of Caracas on October 10th 197.
How I got involved in this hobby/,
well it was in the beginnings of the
90’s when a friend took me to a
hobby store close to his house, I
began buying airplane plastic models
in 1/72 scale then got into the 1/48
scale, then after a while I even
worked at the store and learned a
lot of new stuff about the hobby. At
the time there was no figures in my
mind until I began participating in
several events and I was able to
appreciate the figures, to tell the
truth they didn’t caught my
attention at the first time, but it
was in the year 2000 when in a event
I saw some medieval figures that I
liked a lot, then I decided to begin
painting figures, I started with a
Verlinden vignette which I painted
using acrylics and oil colors, later
I painted some Andrea figures in
acrylics, and some busts where I
used oil colors to paint the faces,
but I never was completely satisfied
until I bought the books by Raul
Latorre and Rodrigo Hernandez
Chacon, was at that moment when you
can say I saw the Light, I mean the
Zenithal Light. Usually painters in
my country don’t use zenithal Light
but direct Light, so I began
detailing the books and understood
better the issue, of course with the
practice I learned some new staff,
later I learned the use of the
famous Flat Base from Tamiya, which
has given me great results and I
still use it.
Given that modelism in my country is
very poor and almost no stores at
all, I frequently order figures from
foreign countries via Internet, is
usually cheaper than buy them
directly from the stores here, so at
the time I solved this problem given
that I don’t sculp my own figure. I
like a lot brands like Pegaso,
Andrea, Warriors, Elite, Latorre
Models, etc, the truth there are so
many brands and I don’t know some
of them. Regarding to paints I
always have used Vajello for several
reasons, the first one is that you
can find them easily in my country
and they have a very wide range of
paints, I also use oil colors but
mostly for the terrain where I mix
Oils with enamels and acrylics, the
figures always in acrylics but with
metals I use Printers Ink. The
brushes I use different kinds,
mainly the Kolinskys from the number
04 to the 2, with a good tip and
very sharp so you can paint the
details with no problems at all, I
also use some cheap synthetic
brushes to paint terrains, metals
and for weathering, those I call the
all terrain.
Regarding to my library, I like the
Monographic books and the
Euromodelism magazine, I am quite a
fan of the Spanish painters, I also
like the French magazine Figurines
and Historical Miniatures form the
U.S where I have two articles
published. I have as well some World
War II publications and a colored
guide of German uniforms (a must
have).
Talking about my favorite painters I
must mention like everybody else
Bill Horan because of the magic of
his figures, for me he is the best
not only for the sculping but the
painting too. My Spanish favorite is
Pepe Gallardo, for me he is an idol
to follow, of course reaching his
level is quite a fantasy, I also
have to mention among the Spanish a
Raúl García Latorre, Rodrigo
Hernández Cachón, José Hernández,
Fidel Rincón the Mascarilla
brothers, Luís Gómez Platón and a
whole bunch that I don’t remember
right now. Among the internationals
Mike Blank, Diego Ruina, Danillo
Caratcci, Mariano Numitone,
Maurizzio Bruno and a long etc.….
I
have participated only in one int’l
event The Leon Rampante in Madrid
Spain, where I got a bronze medal
and a silver medal, something that
makes me very proud so far. There
are so few events in my country and
we don’t see that many figures,
there is little motivation for this
hobby in my country.
Well, I think that’s all I have to
say about my modelistic career, I
hope this hobby grows in the future
specially in a cybernetic world like
ours with all the video games and
gaming consoles, the hobby can’t
reach the little kids but I think
that with the help of the internet
and articles the hobby is growing on
a International level, keep it
growing…
My
deepest Regards
Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth
